Black Jewel Orchid

black jewel orchidThe Black Jewel Orchid, Ludisia discolor, continues to open and show the small individual flowers on the spike.  The orchid gets its name for the dark leaves with red veins.   It is an orchid that lives on the forest floor, so can tolerate low light levels and is native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Burma.  You can see this plant at the conservatory at Miller Nature Preserve in Avon.
